The region
Cable car to the top of a flat-topped mountain, penguins on a suburban beach, wine estates three centuries old, and the island where the country's future was argued out in a limestone quarry.
Cape Town sits on a peninsula between two oceans with a mountain range running down the middle of it, and almost everything worth doing is within an hour of the hotel. Table Mountain has a rotating cable car to the summit. The peninsula road runs to the Cape of Good Hope past Chapman's Peak, a penguin colony and an ostrich farm. Inland, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Constantia have been making wine since the 1680s. And across the bay lies Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spent eighteen of his twenty-seven years, now guided by men who were imprisoned there themselves.
