The region
Two million years of human history in the morning, a hot-air balloon at sunrise, and the streets where apartheid was fought and beaten. Gauteng is the most concentrated few days in the country.
Gauteng is small, dense and extraordinary. Within an hour of the hotel you can stand in the cave where Mrs Ples was found, walk the cell block where Mandela and Gandhi were both imprisoned, and have lunch on Vilakazi Street, the only street on earth to have housed two Nobel Peace laureates. Above it all, balloons go up over the Magaliesberg at first light, and helicopters run the skyline from Sandton to Soweto. The Blue Train leaves from Pretoria for the Cape, and it is still one of the great train journeys in the world.
