The region
Big cats before breakfast, a canyon the colour of rust and cloud, and evenings around a fire with drums. Mpumalanga is the classic South African journey, and we run it privately.
Mpumalanga means 'the place where the sun rises', and it earns the name. Mornings begin in open vehicles on Kruger's sand roads, where lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino share the same waterhole. Afternoons climb the Great Escarpment to the Panorama Route, one of the most photographed stretches of road on the continent, past the Three Rondavels, Bourke's Luck Potholes and waterfalls that drop into rainforest. Evenings belong to the villages: hand-painted Ndebele homesteads, drums, and a dinner our chef cooks over open flame.
