The day
An afternoon in a working village: hand-painted Ndebele homesteads, a craft workshop where you make something yourself, and tea in somebody's kitchen. The community hosts it and the community is paid for it.
Ndebele wall painting is a genuine art form, passed from mother to daughter, and the geometry on these walls is read the way a coat of arms is read. You will meet the women who paint them, sit while they explain the language of the patterns, and try a panel yourself. Afterwards there is beadwork, a homestead visit and tea. Nothing is staged for the camera and nothing is for sale unless you ask.
