Hot-Air Balloon Morning Ride

The day

A dawn flight over the Magalies River valley. You watch the envelope inflate in the dark, lift off as the sun comes up, drift for about an hour, and land to a champagne breakfast laid out in the veld.

Ballooning is quieter than people expect: no engine, no rush of air, just the burner every so often and the valley sliding past below. Flights go at first light because that is when the air is stable, so the pickup is early and the whole thing is over by mid-morning. Pilots are commercially licensed, the baskets are compartmented, and every flight ends with the traditional champagne toast on landing.
