The day
A scenic helicopter flight from Sandton over the Johannesburg skyline, the gold mine dumps, Soweto's rooftops, the Orlando Towers and FNB Stadium. The whole city's shape becomes obvious from the air.
Johannesburg was built on gold and from the air you can still read it: the reef running east to west, the pale mine dumps, the CBD towers, and Soweto spreading south beyond them. The flight passes the Orlando cooling towers, painted end to end with murals, and banks around FNB Stadium, the calabash where the 2010 World Cup final was played. Every seat is a window seat and you fly with a headset so the pilot can talk you through it.
